Alexander the Great

Alexander the Great

“Alexander’s behavior was conditioned along certain lines — heroism, courage, strength, superstition, bisexuality, intoxication, cruelty. He bestrode Europe and Asia like a supernatural figure.” In this succinct portrait of Alexander the Great, distinguished scholar and historian Norman Cantor illuminates the personal life and military conquests of this most legendary of men. Cantor draws from the major writings of Alexander’s contemporaries combined with the most recent psychological and cultural studies to show Alexander as he was — a great figure in the ancient world whose puzzling personality greatly fueled his military accomplishments. He describes Alexander’s ambiguous relationship with his father, Philip II of Macedon; his oedipal involvement with his mother, the Albanian princess Olympias; and his bisexuality. He traces Alexander’s attempts to bridge the East and West, the Greek and Persian worlds, using Achilles, hero of the Trojan War, as his model. Finally, Cantor explores Alexander’s view of himself in relation to the pagan gods of Greece and Egypt. More than a biography, Norman Cantor’s Alexander the Great is a psychological rendering of a man of his time.

Though he made allusions to his own life in all of his films, Fanny and Alexander was the first overtly autobiographical film by Ingmar Bergman. Taking his time throughout (188 minutes to be exact), Bergman recreates several episodes from his youth, using as conduits the fictional Ekdahl family. Alexander, the director’s alter ego, is first seen at age 10 at a joyous and informal Christmas gathering of relatives and servants. Fanny is Alexander’s sister; both suffer an emotional shakedown when their recently-widowed mother (Ewa Froling) marries a cold and distant minister. Stripped of their creature comforts and relaxed family atmosphere, Fanny and Alexander suddenly find their childhood unendurable. The kids’ grandmother (Gunn Wallgren) “kidnaps” Fanny and Alexander for the purpose of showering them with the first kindness and affection that they’ve had since their father’s death. This “purge” of the darker elements of Fanny and Alexander’s existence is accomplished at the unintentional (but applaudable) cost of the hated stepfather’s life. Ingmar Bergman insisted that Fanny and Alexander, originally a multipart television series pared down to feature-film length, represented his final theatrical film, though within a year after its release he was busy with several additional Swedish TV projects, and his final work, the 2003 Saraband (also produced for Swedish television), eventually received global theatrical distribution. Oscars went to Fanny and Alexander for Best Foreign Film, Best Cinematography (Sven Nykvist), Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction/Set Decoration. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Every business desires to achieve success; every business desires to make a brand. With so many products in many niches being sold on-line, but, we tend to don't see that much diversity or originality. Having a unique selling purpose is the simplest means to successfully market a product and beat out the competition. If you want your potential customers to believe your product is one that's value shopping for, this is often the means to try to to it. The simplest thing regarding a USP is that it causes customers to talk regarding your product and do a lot of the selling on your behalf.

Show that Your Business is Ethical - The USP for your product shows everyone that you're offering something of real value, and separates you from the many scammers out there. You want to differentiate yourself from low quality and dishonest businesses, and your USP helps you do this. Aside from the honest competition you face for your product, there are also unethical merchants who are trying to rip customers off. So with your USP, you'll be able to make things clear in the market, and let everybody know that you're clean.

Reach Out to People Emotionally - People actually buy products mainly for emotional rather than logical reasons, which is why you have to reach your customers on this level.

If You Can bring out a benefit of your product that jibes with their emotions and makes them want to take action, you'll make more sales than your competition. Ideally, you want to invoke the emotions of your prospects while at the same time giving them some down to earth benefits of your product. If you can succeed at reaching people emotionally, they will always go with your product rather than a competitor's, because this is how choices are finally made.

The Power of Specializing: It's common nowadays for businesses to try to please everybody. In the attempt to create a product that will please everyone, they tack on so many features that the information becomes almost impossible to absorb. If you find out what your target market wants, you can offer a much more targeted and specific product that people will find much easier to understand and benefit from. Come up with a product that successfully helps people in one area rather than trying to please everybody. By taking an approach that's completely different from that of your competition, you can outsmart them.

To conclude, from this article, you can clearly see just how important it is to develop your own USP if you want to keep moving ahead of your competition. If you can't get people to buy what it is that you have to offer, and convince them to buy from you, the competition is going to do it for you. This is exactly why it is important to pinpoint your USP as quickly as possible if you have not yet already done so. If you're just starting your business, you're in a far better position because the target market does not yet know you and that makes it a lot easier for you to find your USP and position yourself in your target market.
