Stand up paddle boarding has been with us for several years now; however, it wasn’t until June of 2010 that I got to experience it. It was such an exhilarating and new experience for me! Several years ago, expert surfers in Hawaii developed what we call stand up paddle boarding (SUP) today. It has since then, reached the public, surfers and non-surfers alike, athletes and those without very much athletic experience, background or stamina. Why is Stand up paddle boarding a great sport? Stand up paddle boarding is a “low impact” exercise, but even then, it can help you shed large quantities of calories. There is no pounding, harsh movement or any impact on the joints involved, it actually is “no impact”. You are standing, and paddling. For individuals with shoulder injuries the paddling might be a problem based on the nature and extent of the injury. Nonetheless, if you are able to experience it when there is not very much wind, you will be able to paddle gently.

These movements are exercising your whole body. Great! Then we come to the paddling part. Ideally you have a lightweight carbon fiber paddle so as not to tire your shoulders simply from lifting the paddle. Every time you paddle, your arms and back are not only the ones moving against the force of the water but so are your legs and core muscles too! Although it may seem not a lot of work on the outside, in the inside, you will feel the work your body is undertaking. This is a relaxing and soothing experience, it also gets you to get in touch with nature too.
