Ken’s Bar $22.99 In 1998, not-yet-pop-star Ken Hirai started doing shows wherein he’d eschew the pop he normally crafted in favor of lounge-style rendetions of music that he happened to enjoy or gain influence from. In 2003, he recorded his first compilation of this music, taking liberally from American vocal music. Since that early album, Hirai showed himself to be capable of surprising pop compositions with a deep repertoire of vocal techniques and range. Here, the listener gets a chance to pick up more of Hirai’s sensitivity to a song. With the music already written, Hirai takes the opportunity to arrange the songs as light acoustic pieces with only quiet warbling over the top. He hits songs popularized by Norah Jones (“Don’t Know Why”), pieces from Carole King and James Taylor (“You’ve Got a Friend”), and an outstandingly funky acoustic version of George Michael’s “Faith.” The key to these pieces isn’t necessarily in Hirai’s vocals–though they’re well formed, they had a tendency toward thinness in some of these earlier recordings, depending on the song. He could pull a fair falsetto in an attempt to cover Minnie Riperton, but his real abilities lie in a slightly lower register and, moreover, in the instrumental forms and arrangements. There’s not quite enough of Ken Hirai to really make “What a Wonderful World” vibrate the way it needs to, but there’s plenty of him to retain the fun aspects of the Jackson 5′s “ABC.” Maybe even more importantly, Hirai takes care of English lyrics with enunciations rare for Japanese covers. If you’ve only heard his more recent electronic-related recordings, KEN’S BAR should be both revelatory and welcome. |

Ken Burns The War $58.5 Rated: NRSynopsis: The War will be a seven – episode series, produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, that will examine the myriad ways in which the Second World War touched the lives of every family on every street in every town in America. By telling the stories of ordinary people in four quintessentially American towns – Waterbury, Connecticut; Mobile, Alabama; Sacramento, California; and the tiny farming town of Luverne, Minnesota – the series will portray this enormous worldwide catastrophe on an intimate, human scale. The War will intertwine vivid eyewitness accounts of the harrowing realities of life on the front lines with reminiscences of Americans who never left their home towns, and who tried their best to carry on with the business of daily life while their fathers and brothers and sons were overseas. The film will honor and celebrate the bravery, endurance, and sacrifice, of the generation of Americans who lived through what will always be known simply as The War. |

Unique Gifts That Are Perfect Memorabilia of U.S. of A.
To give a gift - it is one of the greatest human experiences. This type of exchange does not only benefit the receiver, but tags along the giver. On my family's upcoming visit, this fact gave me an idea to me to give them unique gifts.
Excitement is already building up upon me just waiting for their arrival. I am aiming to give them the best thing available in the market. This will be my token for their help as I go through my pregnancy.
I got this idea of presenting them something historic that they can bring back home. I plan to give seven gifts for each of my family members to bring back home.
A replica of the White House is what I got for dad, as he has a passion for this kind of artifacts. The face he had upon seeing the miniature building was one priceless moment. A replica of the Statue of Liberty that is in a glassed case was also given to father. It is a good gift to give as it is one of the most famous landmarks in the U.S. The penny spent on this expensive piece became more worth it after seeing his joy.
The American Craft Ribbon was an instant hit for my homemaker mother. The ribbon features a special gloss and unique designs found on each of the ribbon's side. This will be very helpful in her flower arrangement business, particularly for bride's bouquets. The bride's beauty is sure to shine brighter with the crafted ribbon.
A marquetry-designed box is what I desire to gift my soon-to-be married sister. I am sure she will be thrilled with this gift as mother plans to give her new jewelry for the wedding. The one I picked was a box that shows the intricate process of creating marquetry art.
I also gave dad a masterpiece from great painter Sharma Shari. Her natural and beautiful depiction of America in her ancient masterpiece is what made her renowned. While an expensive gift to take home, dad was glad to receive something so artsy.
Another beautiful gift to give out is a bronze sculpture of a dancer. I chose something that is made from pure bronze and possesses a natural shine. This piece will definitely be admired for years.
To make their holidays truly American, I got them Christmas stockings that can be used in keeping their gifts during the season. I made sure that they are unique and captivating when it is displayed. This kind of Christmas stockings are hard to find back home that's why it is a perfect present.
As they only stayed for a short period, I was not able to be with them on most of their shopping trips. However, I know that my gifts will be enough for them to bring back items that are 100% American. These pieces will be a great reminder for the time they spent in the U.S.

''Cheating the cheaters'': The confidence artist in postwar American literature. $49.99 This project explores the ways in which the confidence artist in post-World War II American literature works to subvert and destabilize a culturally pervasive practice that Martin Heidegger terms "Enframing," a scientific mode of thought and behavior that objectifies human beings with the ultimate goal of power and domination. Enframing divests its practitioners of the ability to recognize the otherness of the self or the other, an ability upon which the capacities for love and freedom are founded. While Herman Melville's Confidence Man highlights the dark underside of the ideals of the nineteenth century frontier, the twentieth century confidence artists I discuss draw attention to the destructive potentialities of the "New Frontier" of science as intellectual and material capital. Focusing primarily on works by Flannery O'Connor, Don DeLillo, Ken Kesey, David Mamet, and Han Ong, this project explores the ways the confidence artists in each work undermine this dangerous pattern of technological fundamentalism.;They are paradoxical and ambiguous figures because even while they are experts at human taxonomy, they make their own identity impenetrable and incalculable to their victims. Those being deceived are individuals whose humanity has been eroded by their own habitual practice of Enframing, who, in their calculative thinking, have objectified themselves and others. In their deceptions, these confidence artists expose the hollowness, inadequacy, and hypocrisy of the belief systems of their victims---potentially to the victims themselves. In this sense, they function as restorative agents for their victims. For the writers considered in this study, an apprehension or acknowledgement the otherness, mystery, and incomprehensibility of the self and the other is the precondition to any sort of restoration. In some of these works, those being deceived include the readers, as the most significant deception is wrought not by the confidence character within the text at |
