Curious Trivia Regarding The Ray Ban RB2132 Sunglasses And Other Classic Sunspecs
Sunglasses or sunshades, as some like to call them, started out as a way of protection from the sun but has developed into an essential style accessory to several. They come in all kinds of sizes and styles from classic Teashades of the 60's to more modern icons like the newer Ray Ban RB2132 Wayfarers.
Unknown to many, protecting eye-ware were in existence since ancient times. Inuits used to fashion daylight exposure-reducing snow glasses out of flattened walrus ivory. I don't believe the Inuits had any idea that those goggles would later morph into shutter shades thousands of years later on.
Teashades
Teashades are glasses which are made from medium-sized, perfectly round lenses, supported by pads on the bridge of the nose and a thin wire frame. Interestingly enough, the term Teashades were once used to describe glasses worn to hide the results of recreational drug use such as bloodshot eyes.
Teashades became famous in the 60's thanks to John Lennon, which explains why they were a. K. A 'John Lennon glasses'. Other celebs linked with Teashades are Ozzy Osbourne and the Olsen twins. For the record, this eyeglass style is sometimes called Ozzy glasses. The term Teashades is Never Used now.
Teashades can also be seen in smash hit films like the Matrix where the character Seraph might be seen donning a pair. The main protagonist in the movie Natural Born Killers - Mickey Knox - also sports a pair.
Oversized
Think outsized eye-wear and the name Elton John would instantly come to mind. Elton's image has been associated with the style since the 80's. Outsized glasses were also used by the late Jackie O which is why they are often known as the Jackie O's.
The style made a comeback in the early 21st century as many female celebs were seen wearing them. Nonetheless it could be contended that they were doing so to escape photographers in opposition to wearing them for trendy purposes. But the look did catch on.
Shutter Shades
Shutter Shades were a fad in the 80's after they were seen in music videos by Easy Minds and Animotion. Recently, Kayne West was seen with a pair customized by Alain Mikli.
The fondness for shutter shades was boosted farther during the 2010 FIFA World Cup Finals as fans painted their country's flags on the 'shutters'.
Ray Ban Aviators
The Ray Ban Aviator sunglasses are one of the most recognizable eye-wear designs around. They were initially designed to defend the eyes of air-force pilots during flights. The design has been about since 1936 and like all good designs, they still enjoy quite a good following.
Michael Jackson could never be seen without a couple of Fliers. They were faves of Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr too. They were also prominently featured in movies like Sylvester Stallones Cobra and Tom Cruise's Top Gun.
Ray Ban Wayfarers
The Ray Ban Wayfarer sun shades design first debut in 1952. Like the Fliers, the Ray Ban Wayfarers are regarded as by many as the fastest selling sun shades in history. They were so popular that other brands started imitating the design. It was believed that Audrey Hepburn wore a pair in the film Breakfast at Tiffany's but those weren't Ray Ban Wayfarer sunglasses.
The Wayfarers went thru revamp and the result was the Ray Ban 2132. The new Ray Ban 2132 New Wayfarer sports a smaller less angled frame, and changed from acetate to a lighter injected plastic.
The modified proved successful as the style regained its popularity as the RB2132 might be seen on celebs and is ever present in popular culture.
To summarise :
- Teashades are also known an Lennon Glasses or Ozzy Glasses
- The eyewear the Inuits made were the predecessors to the modern day shutter shades
- Audrey Hepburn did not wear a pair of Wayfarers in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's
