Creating beautiful objects has been in the nature of man from time immemorial. One such creation is the complex designs that are evolved by piecing together slivers of different woods to make a handmade jewelry box. Marquetry is an evolution from the art of inlay and is also known as Moaragh. This method of decorating with wood began with the ancient Persian and Egyptian cultures, especially in their religious and royal décor. The sheet from where the bit will be cut is then placed on this to get maximum accuracy in shape, grain, and depth and then cut out.
Some forms of Marquetry use just two variations of wood to create seaweed, a scroll-like design. Foliate or Arabesque is a form where, besides a variety of woods, ivory too is used to create images of birds and butterflies. Yet another means exists that utilizes brass or tortoiseshell and this, known as “Boulle” or “Buhl” was made famous by Andre Charles Boulle.

Khatamkari is a Persian adaptation of marquetry where surfaces are embellished with not just wood, but bone and metal as well, on a variety of surfaces.
