Eliminating Acne Is Becoming Easier With Blue Light Acne Treatments
Blue light acne treatment is effective in helping to get rid of acne. Here is the reason blue light is effective in treating acne.
Many adults and around 85% of adolescents have suffered acne outbreaks. Pimples and other sores result from pores that become plugged by a mass of skin oil (sebum) and dead skin cells. Once a pore becomes plugged the bacteria trapped in the pore begin to multiple and infect adjoining tissue. This results in the redness and tenderness often connected with acne.
There are several common treatments associated with acne prevention. First, cleansing is helpful to get rid of surplus skin oil over the surface. Bacteria on the skin in then eliminated with a mild anti-bacterial cream or gel. Dead skin cells are loosened with an exfoliant to allow them to be washed away. By eliminating the three components essential for acne (surplus oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells) the vast majority of acne can be prevented.
Once pores become plugged they comprise blackheads or whiteheads. These are tiny blemishes and differ as a result of the position of the plug. With a blackhead, the clog is close to the surface where it will become oxidized and darken. If the clog descends a short distance into the pore the top of the pore can close up over the plug and the plug continues to be light colored and forms a whitehead.
As the bacteria begin to multiple within the clogged pore the cells surrounding the pore grow irritated and turn red, forming a pimple. The region infected can grow and the size and extent of the blemish can increase beyond the cells belonging to the pore. Pressure on the pimple can drive the infection into the sebaceous gland and perhaps rupture the cell structure permitting the infection to spread to lower layers of the skin.
One solution to coping with active acne is to destroy the bacteria at the location of the pimple. This will ease the irritation and reduce the size and intensity of the blemish. Serious acne is often taken care of with systemic medicines like oral anti-biotics. Most milder acne outbreaks may be dealt with effectively by therapies applied locally.
One such therapy is acne light treatment. Direct exposure to sunlight is known to help acne. But, full spectrum sunlight can harm the skin. So, scientists have investigated specific spectral ranges to see what is effective against acne. One of the first groups to investigate this topic found that light within the violet range activated an organic compound, a porphyrin, within the acne causing bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes. This porphyrin releases a signlet oxygen that eventually kills the bacteria.
To work against the quickly multiplying bacteria, several consecutive treatments are required to kill the whole set of bacteria in a pimple. With the bacteria gone, the irritation is eliminated and the healing process can take place to restore the normal skin condition.
The blue light can be provided light-emitting diodes (LEDs), lasers, fluorescent lamps, or even bright full spectrum light. Numerous dermatologists use the Dusa Blue Light which is similar to an array of fluorescent lights that emit light at a 400nm wavelength. In addition, numerous dermatologists use Levulan (aminolevulinic acid) on affected areas before the light therapy. The Levulan is photosensitive and under blue light helps damage specific skin cells.
While treatments from a dermatologist might cost several hundred dollars each, low cost home devices have found there way to the market. Competition is keeping the price for most of the devices in a reasonable range from around $40 to $300 or so.
Keep in mind that blue light acne treatment will not produce immediate results as the skin must heal. But many of us find blue light acne therapy more effective than benzoyl peroxide and less irritating to their skin.
