The Easter Bunny and its Introduction into a Religious Holiday
Easter is a religious holiday second only to Christmas which commemorates the ascension of Jesus Christ into Heaven. It has been celebrated for centuries by Christians around the world. Many people wonder why everyone associates this occasion nowadays with colored eggs and bunnies. How does the Easter bunny and eggs commemorate the ascension of Christ into Heaven?
To learn how this relationship came about, you have to travel way back in time. Since life is starting to appear in the spring, it has long been a time of celebration in many religions. Crops are growing, and baby animals are born. Even the ancients recognized the coming of spring and the renewal of life with pagan rites. In the Saxon culture, a fertility goddess called Eastre was given her own festival. Rabbits figured prominently in the celebration, because they are notoriously fertile and a perfect symbol of the desire for new life.
Many missionaries tried to conver the Pagans to Christianity during the 2nd century A.D.. In order to attract new members to the religion, the missionaries adapted pagan festivals and customs into Christian holidays. Since the resurrection of Christ and the celebration of Eastre occured during the same time, the two were combined and the sacred rabbit was included.
People changed Eastre to Easter over the years. The lamb and the rabbit were symbolic innocent creatures that stood for Christ's sacrifice for man.
The Easter bunny, which has become part of our culture today, had its beginnings in German traditions going clear back to the 1500s. If children were good during this time, they believed they would receive a set of colored eggs from a magical rabbit. This tradition was brought to the new world in the 1700s by the Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants.
Eggs have been considered a sign of rebirth since the early years A.D.. Pope Gregory the Great banned the consumption of eggs in the 600s for the entire period of Lent, which occured over the 40 days preceding Easter. Therefore, when Easter arrived and people could eat eggs again, they considered them a special treat. Although we don't follow this practice today, we have adopted the tradition of making decorated eggs a part of our Easter celebration. Doc No.azlcssaeh-sdgfhkl
