How did the Easter bunny become part of a religious holiday?

Easter is one of the most important Christian holidays only second to Christmas. Christians around the world have celebrated it for centuries. Today it has come to be equated with bunnies and colored eggs, but did you ever wonder why? It can be hard figuring out how the Easter bunny and eggs celebrate the ascension of Christ.

One has to go way back in time to learn how this association was formed. Many religions have long celebrated during the spring since it's the time when life starts to reappear. Crops are growing, and baby animals are born. Even ancient pagans celebrated the coming of spring. Eastre was a fertility goddess worshipped in the Saxon culture. Rabbits become associated with the celebration prominently thanks to their reputation of being very fertile creatures.

In the 2nd century A.D., there were many missionaries who were trying to convert the pagan peoples to Christianity. In an effort to attract new members to Christianity, the missionaries adopted various customs and festivals into the religion. Since the festival of Eastre occurred at the same time of the year as the celebration of the resurrection of Christ, it was only natural that the two be combined into one holiday which included the sacred rabbit.

Eastre was changed to Easter over the years. The rabbit and the lamb came to symbolize innocent creatures that were sacrificed to commemorate the sacrifice Christ made for man.

As we know it today, you would find the origins of the Easter bunny in 1500s Germany. Children believed that they would receive a basket full of colored eggs from a magical rabbit if they were good during this time. Pennsylvannia Dutch immigrants brought this custom to America in the 1700s.

Eggs have been considered a sign of rebirth since the early years A.D.. In the 600s, the then-Pope Gregory the Great put a ban on eating eggs during the period of Lent which is the 40 days immediately preceding Easter. By the time Easter rolled around, people considered the eggs a special treat since they could eat them again. Although some guidelines of old are no longer followed, we still make use of decorated eggs as part of Easter celebrations. Doc No.azlcssaeh-sdgfhkl
