What is a TENS Device?
EMS (electronic muscle stimulation) devices are used to induce muscle contractions by using electrical impulses. These portable devices come with detachable electrode pads. The electrode pads convey the impulses to the skin. The electrode pads are generally lubricated to provide proper contact with the skin and to allow for good conduction of the current. The most common device is a TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) unit. Such devices have proven useful in the treatment of sprains, low back pain and patients with arthritis.
EMS and TENS units are considered devices under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. As such, the FDA is responsible for regulating the sale of these devices throughout the United States. Companies that wish to sell these devices, legally, need to adhere to the FDA's pre-market regulatory requirements. The majority of MedWatch Online Voluntary Reporting Form reviewed by the FDA are for use in physical therapy under the supervision of a health care professional. Any company wanting to sell EMS or TENS devices directly to the public would have to show the FDA that it can be used safely and effectively in the home.
The FDA has approved a number of EMS and TENS devices for use in treating medical conditions. Health care professionals rely on electronic muscle stimulation for patients that require muscle re-education, relaxation of muscle spasm, increased range of motion or prevention of muscle atrophy. These devices are primarily used to assist patients recovering from impaired muscle function caused by a medical condition, not to increase the size of specific muscles enough to affect actual appearance.
