Tanning is what the human skin undergoes as the result of UV radiation from the sun causing direct DNA damage to the skin, which the body as expected fights and seeks to repair. And in the protection and repair efforts of the body, it produces and releases the brown-colored pigment called melanin into the skin's cells, which in turn gives the human skin the dark tone of a tanned person, plus at the same time can also cause sunburn.
Now the tanning progression can also be created by simulated UV radiation. Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes and defends the body from direct and indirect DNA harm by absorbing most of the solar radiation. At this stage two different processes are involved. This kind of tan, the kind formed by increased melanogenesis, lasts so much longer than the one that is caused by oxidation of existing melanin.
