Gran Canaria: Paradise Of The Atlantic
One of the nicest aspects of Gran Canaria is that it not only offers unique culture and history but also some world-class beaches; in short, the island has something for every taste.
Records of life on Gran Canaria date back two thousand years to when people called the Canarii became the first residents of the island. However, Gran Canaria, as we know it, was most likely shaped more by the Spanish conquistadors who made the island their own around 1458. The cuisine, for instance, is unique in that it has the best parts from the African and Spanish cultures to offer something as tasty as it is different. The island has a vast natural wealth in terms of fresh produce and this is reflected in the diversity of food. Central to the cuisine is fresh fish, honey, fruit and vegetables. Most of the meat is bought from mainland Spain. There is a certain spice about a lot of the sauces (mojos) cooked on the island, but you can also opt for something a little less fiery if you so desire.
Every day, the locals catch fresh lobster, crab and sea bream and add this to the bountiful harvest that comes from the land in the shape of tropical fruits, avocados, goat's cheese and beans. If you are a fish lover, you will find joy in the cuisine in Gran Canaria. The locals also are fond desserts and their ice cream is a must-try experience.
With spectacular natural beauty, unique culture, and a delectable variety of meals, you would expect a vacation in Gran Canaria to wring out your savings account. Surprisingly, however, it's quite easy to find easy-for-the-pocket hotels in the area. Prices have been kept within reach due to the recent financial crisis and Gran Canaria still offers excellent value for your money. Unlike other resort islands, this beautiful island has really clement temperatures all year round so it is a great winter destination as well as a popular summer hot spot.
