Overcoming The Fear Of Death Is Essential If You Want To Lead Fruitful Life

Death is not only an inevitable fact of life, but in most cases desirable too. Can you imagine what would have happened if everybody lived forever? Can you contemplate your life once you reach 100? It will not at all be pleasant, at least for most of us! Yet, few of us are actually very comfortable about the idea of death and dying. To be frank fearing death too is as natural as death itself, but one must overcome such fear if you he or she wants to lead a full life.

Most people have witnessed physical death in some form – grandparents, parents, siblings, spouse, children etc. While grieving is a natural process that everyone goes through when they lose a loved one, overcoming the fear of death is a must for everyone. There is a medical term for a fear of death – ‘thanatophobia’. This is a state that can affect millions of people and it is very important to recognize this phobia and get help for it. Apart from fear of death, thanatophobia also refers to fear of anything associated with death.

Sometimes, thanatophobia can just refer to ‘fear of the unknown’. While most people have some form of fear of the unknown, letting it rule and ruin your life is what must not happen. To debunk the myths surrounding death, people must first have an understanding of what it is. Death is just a human being ceasing to exist in the current form and taking on another. As already mentioned, different religions have different concepts of death and immortality. In fact, medical professionals say that those who believe in a religion – whatever it is – are less likely to fear death than those who do not.

There are two distinct terms, which can describe such fear very clearly:
• Necrophobia is the fear of dead things and everything associated with it such as corpse, coffin and tombstone. While such things may instill in us some uneasiness under some circumstances, a patient of necrophobia will feel shortness of breath, rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, sweating, dry mouth and shaking, feeling sick and uneasy, psychological instability etc.
• Thanatophobia on the other hand is fear of death itself; it is the fear of being dead or dying. People suffering from such phobia usually remain so preoccupied with death that they are hardly able to lead a normal life.

Other than taking resort to religion; You Can also try to overcome such fear through the following methods:
• Never allow your mind to dwell on the subject for long.
• As soon as you find fear creeping in, tell yourself that death is natural phenomenon and that there is no point in worrying about something, which is inevitable. You will go where all others have gone.
• If you fear that people will forget you as soon as you are dead do not worry; if you lead a good and fruitful life, you will remembered for a long time to come.
• If you believe dying is painful, you are wrong. On the contrary, death relieves everybody of every pain and suffering.

As long as there are people who love you in this world, you will be remembered. So, do not feel that once you die, you will be forgotten. Don’t waste time thinking of the inevitable, but live life to the fullest, thanking God for each new day you have and try and do something good and creative in it each day. Death is a part of life, so, until you need to, do not dwell on it too much. While for some people death comes suddenly, others who have a terminal illness will have time to prepare for it.

Now, necrophobia is the fear of dead things and everything associated with it. A dead body, a casket or even tombstone can give rise to different symptoms such as shortness of breath, rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, sweating, dry mouth and shaking, feeling sick and uneasy, psychological instability etc. Thanatophobia on the other hand is fear of death itself. Mere sight of corpses or caskets does not actually have any effect on such person, but watching a person die may become impossible for such people.

If you have a terminal disease, do not be depressed thinking about your imminent death. There is no way you can turn the clock back. Yes, you should continue with the treatment until the end, but if death is really impending, accept it. There is no point in wasting whatever time you have left in brooding over what is inevitable and creating a foreboding picture of life that you hardly know anything about. Instead, try to imbibe a positive feeling in yourself and live each day as fully as possible. You are after all born to be victorious, not to die like a coward.
