The Situational Leadership Model: Tip of the Day for Busy Managers
This week we talk about Ken Blanchard’s Situational Leadership Model. This simple tool helps leaders and managers decide when they should be more directive, and when they should coach, support, or delegate more. It also helps to diagnose performance problems as problems of commitment or competence, and how to remedy both.
Monday’s Tip (Situational Leadership Model): Identify performance issues as “Competence” or “Commitment”. If you put a gun to someone’s head, and they still can’t perform a task, you have a compentence problem, otherwise, it’s a commitment problem.
Tuesday’s Tip (Situational Leadership Model): Remember that the same employee may need a different management style in different situations. A person may need very directive behaviour on one job task, while You Can easily delegate to them on another. You need to adjust your style to match.
Wednesday’s Tip (Situational Leadership Model): Match the style (Directing, Coaching, Supporting, or Delegating) based on the situation. One style doesn’t fit all, and once you’ve determined someone’s developmental level, it’s easy to determine the most effective management style.
Thursday’s Tip (Situational Leadership Model): Figure out which style you default to. Each of us has a preferred management style, so be aware of what your preferred style is, and work to improve the other styles.
Friday’s Tip (Situational Leadership Model): Check your diagnosis often. People learn and improve, which will require you to adjust your management style accordingly.

Question of the Week: Which style of leadership do you think is the most overused: Directing (Telling), Coaching (Selling), Supporting (Participating), or Delegating?
