Writing and Literacy in Chinese, Korean and Japanese

Writing and Literacy in Chinese, Korean and Japanese

$195

Chinese, Japanese, South (and North) Koreans in East Asia have a long, intertwined and distinguished cultural history and have achieved, or are in the process of achieving, spectacular economic success. Together, these three peoples make up one quarter of the world population. They use a variety of unique and fascinating writing systems: logographic Chinese characters of ancient origin, as well as phonetic systems of syllabaries and alphabets. The book describes, often in comparison with English, how the Chinese, Korean and Japanese writing systems originated and developed; how each relates to its spoken language; how it is learned or taught; how it can be computerized; and how it relates to the past and present literacy, education, and culture of its users. Intimately familiar with the three East Asian cultures, Insup Taylor with the assistance of Martin Taylor, has written an accessible and highly readable book. Writing and Literacy in Chinese, Korean and Japanese is intended for academic readers (students in East Asian Studies, linguistics, education, psychology) as well as for the general public (parents, business, government). Readers of the book will learn about the interrelated cultural histories of China, Korea and Japan, but mainly about the various writing systems, some exotic, some familar, some simple, some complex, but all fascinating.

Some Korean Publications are Chosen for a French Rendition

At the turn of the last century, Japanese scholars adopt a similarity to Western culture through cautiously chosen translations in order to change Japanese by questioning the nation’s cultural customs, specifically the traditional ones. A flood of translations of modernist literature and Western literary theories influenced significantly the cultural boom of the 1970s. Translations from German, which is a good instance, into Japanese, has turned out to be a key factor in shaping up Japan’s academia. As a matter of fact, it should be noted, Westernization in research does not mechanically turn into a single-sided activity. Thus this has resulted in the German Translation of some major Japanese authors.

This does not aim at cultural homogeneity, but it will surely make globalization a less harmful problem. For this reason two scholars, one educated in Korea and the other in France, and both of them familiar with Korean and French cultural studies, have attempted to deal with the contrast between the global and local aiming to reach an agreement on an explanation of Korean and French to English Translation studies in a global context. The Korean gender studies discussion in the pre-war era is troubled by evident decay, as the theoretical paradigms used are not complex and do not have critical support.

Any effort to make the West a database of knowledge is comparable to making it global, which is a perilous development. After a period of changes, various Vietnamese scholars apply Western theoretical ideology in order to finish their research. Their aim is to become the literary avant-garde of the new age, by staging discussions on cultural theory with many of their Spanish counterparts with the objective to revive Vietnamese critical atmosphere. This has led to some Vietnamese critical publications being selected for a Spanish Translation, which will facilitate the disclosure of the Vietnamese research to European critical scholarship. In the end, several of the theories that are presented touch upon not only scientific importance but also a natural Vietnamese theoretical research.
