The Century Of The Celeberity by Pamela Jeffers
The 20th Century was the interval when the movie star culture took off, particularly from the Forties onwards. There were individuals who enjoyed celeb standing before then, similar to Lord Byron and some music corridor stars, but they were the exception. The extra mass media there is, the extra celebrities we appear to acquire. There are various causes for the appearance of the celebrity century and sociologists have studied the topic in depth.
The Twenties and Thirties were the a long time of the silent movie and stars like Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Laurel and Hardy had been stars. There was glamour too, with Fay Wray and Lillian Gish. Hollywood's biggest contribution to the movie star century was film icon Valentino. He was charismatic and good-looking, and mobbed wherever he went. Ladies wept uncontrollably when he died. He was probably the first superstar as we think of them today.
Films also dominated in the 1940s, with male stars resembling John Wayne, Clarke Gable and Robert Mitchum. The ladies were represented by Greta Garbo, Rita Hayworth and Lana Turner. Sometimes the pressure of the superstar century and the fame it brought was too much. Garbo famously withdrew from the limelight, saying that she wished to be left alone.
Movie stars had been the royalty of America and other people couldn't get enough of them. Scandal was uncommon then, as they were beneath the safety of the studios, but when it did break loose then they have been finished. It was different then, you'd by no means see Bette Davis with no make up and her hair undone. They have been on responsibility on a regular basis they usually always seemed gorgeous. The most exciting movie star century sensations were the superstar couples, like Gable and Jean Harlow. All of the world loves a lover.
By the late Nineteen Fifties, the anti hero was in vogue and the celebrity culture was changing. James Dean and Marlon Brando had a foul boy picture, which the women loved. That led on to the counter tradition of the 1960s and films started to replicate the choice life of the young. Rock music was throwing up the biggest icons but of the celeb century. The likes of Jim Morrison, Mick Jagger and the Beatles have been handled like gods. Performers had been celebrities for challenging the establishment.
Celebrities come and go, generally lasting a number of years and generally a number of decades. Sport too has contributed its fair proportion to the celeb century and fans feel they've a personal stake in their favorite soccer star or basketball player. Supermodels take a number of room up within the press and their private lives are always beneath scrutiny. At present, the celeb century appears to have descended into the depths. These days, people need to be well-known with out placing the work in. We have come a great distance from Valentino to the Huge Brother contestants.
