A Review on Love and Other Drugs
My first impression on the movie when I saw its title is that it’s about love and illegal drugs. I was also half-expecting this movie to be an excuse for the makers to make Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal appear naked on screen. Surprisingly though, I found myself enjoying the movie while learning some pharmaceutical stuff along the way. I learned that Zoloft, the antidepressant, has been here for years and that it might increase the chances of teen suicide (as mentioned by Gyllenhaal’s character to another rep), why Viagra should not be taken in multiple doses at once and how dirty the pharmaceutical field as a whole.
Love and Other Drugs is a story of Jaime Randall (Jake Gyllenhaal) which was set around the year 1997. The film opens with Jaime as a salesman in an appliance store, passing off as a jerk by hooking up with the boss’ girlfriend. A typical charismatic, smart, good-looking jerk without too much care with this life or relationships. Coming from an achiever family and fresh from quitting (or being fired) from his job, he decides to become a drug salesman for Pfizer. The story began to change when he met the unconventional Maggie Murdoc (Anne Hathaway) in a clinic, while waiting for her medications for early-onset Parkinson’s. They had sex and as they say the rest is history as they pursued a serious relationship pestered with problems including Maggie’s fear of commitment, her failing health and Jaime’s struggle to prove himself.
I enjoyed the exchanges of witty banter and the steamy scenes between the two for most parts of the movie. I was particularly amused at Jaime having panic attacks when he said “I love you” to Maggie with her replying “I said I love you to a cat once” in an attempt to calm him down. An emotional turn started when Maggie was suffering too much tremors and they started finding ways to manage her Parkinson’s. It’s not that I’m against the emotional side of it because I think it’s appropriate, but the way the movie suddenly became serious was not properly transitioned in my opinion.
Most, if not all, know how much Jake and Anne complement each other as actors. I just wish for a more solid material next time for both actors so we’ll see what they’re really made off. In case you are wondering, the screenplay was lifted from the non-fiction book Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman by Jamie Reidy which means that it’s a true story. The movie was set in 1997 but the mentioned drugs are still around, some are believed to cause side effects such as in Zoloft birth defects. Also, I would like to believe that Love and Other Drugs became an advertisement for Pfizer as Zoloft and Viagra were repeatedly mentioned in the movie.
