Prepping Photographs for Proclamation in Digital Photo Booklets
Sharing digital photo prints online can generate many smiles.
So you’re ready to publish your first of what could become several digital photo books. You are progressing nicely, having already selected your background, theme, and size. All systems appear to be a go, and you are surprised at the ease in which the project is unfolding. Then your high hopes are dashed by a message from your computer telling you your selected photographs do not make the grade to be printed. How can this be?
Pixels, tiny colored squares in great quantities, make digital photography what it is today. The number of pixels in a linear inch – pixels per inch or PPI – determines the resolution quality of your image. The greater number of pixels in a prescribed area in a digital photo will give the image a higher resolution, thus providing the photographer with a clearer picture.
Considerations re: digital photography
- Most people choose quick uploads thus compressing pixels
- Some Internet sites compress images without asking permission
- Save your original images in the format you first took them
Because computer screens can‘t tell the difference, Internet photos with small pixel dimensions will look good there, but lose clarity when images are downloaded. The speed in which smaller images are downloaded greatly exceeds that of larger images.
Common, quick uploads to websites applying faster methods such as a jpg format save time, but lose the quality of the image. Fast uploads to websites can save ten times the amount of time than slow uploads, yet the payback comes in what‘s lost in the quality of the image.
Some sites automatically compress images to smaller file sizes without even asking for manageability and space purposes. It‘s your responsibility to save your pictures from your disk.
