When it comes to being an interpreter, translator or any career where one must speak another language, it’s one thing to have studied the language since high school; it’s a totally different thing to have spent even six months in a country that speaks that second language. Taking the occasional long weekend in Montreal or San Juan doesn’t count.

If anyone really knows this, it’s hiring authorities. Many such recruiters won’t say so, but they won’t even hire a person unless they have had what they call “total immersion” in another country. By that they mean one spent as much as a year actually living in a part of that country, ate the local cuisine, watched the TV programming and even haggled with a shop keeper.

There is a solid logic for this. A person who will be working on the international front will better understand a language if they understand the culture that created the language. They will be able to better differentiate what a word means in all its contexts, not just the textbook denotation.

Of course, there are the lucky students who did live in another country thanks to their family. They were either the children of immigrants, had family who worked in international business, the military or in diplomacy, or some other similar circumstance. Unfortunately, these people are a very rare minority. Yet there is a way a person wanting to do this can still end up with an equally similar amount of experience, they can participate in a student exchange program.

Before saying this is only for high school students, think twice. There are many who study language as late as in their Doctoral program that will spend a year in Madrid, Paris or Beijing. Many institutions of higher learning, both online and traditional colleges, have such programs in place. Yes, they are not cheap, but there are also scholarships and grants available through organizations such as the CIEE or Rotary Youth Exchange.

One thing one must always consider when taking this route is that each organization has certain bylaws. For instance, the Rotary only allows its candidates to pack two suitcases and even limits the number of communications one can make with one’s home. As for keeping up with studies, some might expect you to take an overseas school’s classes; others might expect you to continue your studies with your home school online.

When you come back, your school might put you through some sort of testing to see just exactly how much you did learn. The benefit there is if you do exceptionally well you could end up being able to skip a few classes, graduating that much quicker.

Otherwise, look at these online distance learning programs as a great way to advance one’s position when it’s time to enter the working world. You Can be in a country where you are learning the customs and language. Imagine students being in Madrid or Bolivia, learning the culture while getting their speech and language degree. Open up exciting doors to a future you’re dreaming of as you make new friends and colleagues, advancing your knowledge with a degree on line. It’s something you just can’t get out of books and in many ways, that kind of education is priceless.
