The Red Narra (Pterocarpus indicus) is found in several parts of Asia (Thailand, Burma, Indonesia, Vietnam, etc) and northern Australasia; It is the national tree of the Philippines. It belongs to the pea family Leguminosae or Fabaceae. It is known by various names all over the world; the most common names are Andaman Redwood, Angsana, Sena, Sonokembang, Tnug, Kaibocca Wood, Burmese Rosewood, and Asana.
The same tree produces the breathtaking Amboyna Burl. The tree grows to a height of about 40 meters and has a trunk that measures 2 meters in diameter. You will find on most of these trees, buttresses that extend upward and outward all around the tree. It is a very heavy and hardwood.
The hardwood in some places is somewhat purple in color but the most common colors are reddish tan, rose, and a deep orange red. At different angles, when held up to light, a piece of this wood reveals a marked change in appearance. Due to an inherent quality of the wood cells, this wood becomes a beautiful opalescent color when placed in water.
Red Narra Wood is ideal for marquetry because of its rich colour and ability to be polished well and the patterns of the grain and the intense colours are unparalleled by any other wood.
