The Roman Catacombs

Rome, otherwise called the "Eternal City", is one of the most visited towns in Europe and the world . The town is famous for its huge and rich historical heritage. Having been the center of power, religion and culture being the famed town of the Roman Empire, Rome exerted gigantic influence around the planet during its more than 2,500 years of existence.

Amid the city's famous landmarks and historic sites, particularly Catholic Rome ; with its 9 hundred churches, the Roman catacombs remain a must see. The catacombs stretches for a length of thirteen kilometres and has some forty thousand crypts. Who would like to visit the catacombs in Rome should book an apartment Rom in time.

The catacombs of Rome were the subterranean Christian cemeteries. As the Romans practiced cremation rites they forbade funerals inside the vicinity of the town walls. Traditional Christians forbade cremation believing that the corpse had to be left entire to be resurrected. The issue was that early Christians didn't own land individually, and the Church had not had the time to amass collective land to allow individual funeral plots. This made an issue in space which led on to the development of catacombs. Do not miss the catacombs in Rome and book now your appartement Rom.

The catacombs were huge business. Folks paid masses of cash to be buried in them especially in a coveted spot close to a martyr. Constantine spoiled that business opportunity when he validated Christianity as the state religion, thus ending martyrdom. If families wanted a painting or a special symbol like a cross, a dove or a fish on the rock face close to the funeral spot they were forced to pay quite a bit extra.

There a lot of catacombs under Rome and the surrounding districts and every one of them has its own significance in history. There are fourteen famous catacomb types. These are the catacomb of Marcellinus and Peter, of Domitilla, of Commodilla, of Gegerosa, of Praetextatus, of Priscilla, of San Caqlisto, of San Lorentzo, of San Prancanzo, of San Sebestiano, of San Lorenzo, of San Prancanzio, of San Sebestanio, of San Calantino, of Sant Agnese, of through Anapo and Jewish catacombs. Only 5 are open for tourists.
