Commander Edward John Smith’s career had been a remarkable example of how a man from a humble background could get far in the world. Born to a working-class family in the landlocked Staffordshire Potteries, he went to sea at the age of 17 and rose rapidly through the ranks of the merchant navy, serving first in sailing vessesls and later in the new steamships of the White Star Line. By 1912, he as White Star’s senior commander and regarded by many in the shipping world as the ‘millionaire’s captain’. In 1912, Smith was given command of the new RMS Titanic for her maiden voyage, but what should have been among the crowning moments of his long career at sea turned rapidly into a nightmare following Titanic’s collision with an iceberg. In a matter of hours the supposedly unsinkable ship sank, taking over 1,500 people with her, including Captain Smith.

The Beauty of Organic Rose Gardening

Instead of envying your neighbor’s rose garden, you too can grow healthy plants with magnificent blooms, rich in color and sweet fragrance. Most people think that organic rose gardening takes too much time and effort but in truth, You Can have a gorgeous garden with little help simply by knowing how. Roses have been the number one flower throughout the world’s existence, grown naturally without modern day chemicals. If You Love roses and want to do what you can to promote a healthy environment, you can simply by getting involved with rose planting naturally.

To be successful with rose planting, you need three things. First, you need to have rich soil, second, roses have deep roots so watering has to be deep, and third, roses require about seven hours of direct and five hours of indirect sunlight daily. Using these three elements, you will find that your plants grow big and strong and blooms are colorful and sweet smelling.

Roses are unique in that many phases of growing happen naturally. For instance, photosynthesis is a process in which leaves change because of the sun’s energy and water. Then, the soil is loaded with bacteria, fungus, nematodes, and other microorganisms that help to break down dead leaves, stems, and blooms. All of this works to create rich soil, which in turn, promotes beautiful rose bushes. With organic rose growing, you want to avoid chemicals, which kill the microorganisms that your garden needs.

You will also find that rose bushes can become accustomed to chemicals so if you start your garden using commercial products and then try to switch to organic growing, the roses would have a difficult time adjusting. Most people think that organic rose gardening is expensive but in truth, it is more affordable than using chemicals so if you want gorgeous blooms with amazing fragrance, stay away from chemicals.

Remember, that proper rose bush care will require will require rich soil. Rather than spend a ton of money to prepare the soil, you might consider creating your own compost pile. Find a spot out in the yard and then begin to pile on scraps such as food, old newspapers, grass clippings, dog waste, and anything that you would normally toss out that can decay. Over time, the compost pile would be turned to help with the decay process. When ready, compost would be added to the garden, which improves the soil’s quality.

In addition to soil, roses are prone to pests but not all pests are bad. In fact, ladybugs and wasps are quite helpful so if you were to use chemicals, the good insects would be destroyed. Instead, you want to use only organic products so you let nature take its course. You will also find that snakes, birds, lizards, and frogs are good for rose gardens in that they eat worms and grubs that can be destructive. Whenever organic rose gardending, you will find many organic products which are now sold at gardening centers.

The bottom line is that organic rose gardening is not hard and when a few simple tips are followed, you grow the most spectacular blooms possible. Your roses will be full of large, colorful, and sweet smelling flowers for you to enjoy. Choosing to grow organically will not just save you money but also time working in the garden. Even if you are planting roses that have been grown chemically, you can still grow them organically although you would need to provide a little more care.
