History is a major lure for people visiting Salzburg, and there is definitely no shortage of it. There has been evidence of inhabitants in the area from as far back as 15 BC. Bavaria's name actually means "Salt Castle," a name that came from all the salt that used to be shipped up and down the Salzach River. Schloss Hellbrunn is a great way to learn a Little Bit about the history of Salzburg. This breathtaking building actually used to be the summer palace of the Archbishops. There is plenty to see and do, including stunning gardens and fountains, and because it's a low-key sort of way to spend some time, you aren't tired out for the rest of your day.
If you are looking for the best possible view of Salzburg, head to Hohensalzburg Fortress. This fortress is perched on top of a mountain, and offers breathtaking views of the city. Inside is a very interesting museum that contains artifacts and other objects pertaining to the history of Salzburg and the fortress itself. If you have a little bit of extra time, stop by Residenz Square to hear the Glockenspiel play. It is over 300 years old and plays every day at 11am and 6pm.
While discovering the local history may be a great way to spend your time, shopping is also a great activity, as is sampling local cuisine. Getreidegasse and Alter Markt Square with their old-fashioned shops are so neat to see. If you are a lover of beer, definitely take the time to stop at the Müllner Bräu beer garden and sip Märzen in a genuinely beautiful location. The farm markets sell all sorts of delicious food, from pastries to cheeses and to fruits and vegetables. Apfelstrudel and wiener schnitzel are other popular dishes, of course.
This little list barely covers a fraction of the things you are able to do in Salzburg. Take the time to do a little research yourself. Make a plan that involves seeing the things you are interested in, whether it's delving into the life of Mozart, the course of history, or the artistic background of Salzburg, you won't be disappointed. Get your passports before you go, however, And don't forget: if you have a lost U S online passport, you can get a replacement for it online.
