The Easter Bunny and its Introduction into a Religious Holiday
Easter is a religious holiday second only to Christmas which commemorates the ascension of Jesus Christ into Heaven. Easter is an occasion that Christians have celebrated for hundreds of years. Colored eggs and bunnies have come to be associated with this holiday and many people wonder why. It can be hard figuring out how the Easter bunny and eggs celebrate the ascension of Christ.
One has to go way back in time to learn how this association was formed. Spring has always been a time of celebration in many religions, because winter is over and life is starting to appear again. Baby animals are born and crops start growing during this time. Even the ancients recognized the coming of spring and the renewal of life with pagan rites. Eastre was a fertility goddess worshipped in the Saxon culture. Rabbits become associated with the celebration prominently thanks to their reputation of being very fertile creatures.
Many missionaries tried to conver the Pagans to Christianity during the 2nd century A.D.. These missionaries adapted certain festivals and customs into Christian holidays in order to attract pagans to their religion. Since the resurrection of Christ and the celebration of Eastre occured during the same time, the two were combined and the sacred rabbit was included.
Eastre was changed to Easter over the years. The rabbit and the lamb came to symbolize innocent creatures that were sacrificed to commemorate the sacrifice Christ made for man.
You would have to go back to the 1500s in Germany to find the origins of the Easter bunny as we know it today. At that time, children believed that if they were very good, at Easter time they would receive a nest of colored eggs from Oschter Haws, a magical rabbit. This tradition was brought to the new world in the 1700s by the Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants.
Eggs have been considered a sign of rebirth since the early years A.D.. The eggs which are an integral part of the celebration dating back to the 600s when Pope Gregory the Great banned the consumption of eggs for the entire period of Lent. By the time Easter rolled around, people considered the eggs a special treat since they could eat them again. Although some of the tradition has been cut out from modern society, we still make use of decorated eggs for the occasion. Doc No.azlcssaeh-sdgfhkl
