What Are The Causes Of Acid Stomach?
Sour stomach, which is also called acid stomach, acid indigestion, or dyspepsia (the terms will be used interchangeably in this article) takes place more regularly than any other type of gastrointestinal ailment.
The Johns Hopkins University recently reported that roughly 25 percent of Americans have some form of acid indigestion at any given moment. One person in 20 who visited their primary care doctor in a recent year did so thanks to sour stomach symptoms.
Acid stomach symptoms make you feel uncomfortable because your stomach and intestines have difficulty processing what you've eaten in a meal. In fact, the most common causes of symptoms of sour stomach and indigestion are eating too much, eating too quickly or eating something you have trouble digesting. There are a number of medications can cause symptoms of sour stomach and indigestion too: aspirin and other NSAIDs, digitalis, corticosteroids, iron, a number of antibiotics, theophylline and niacin, among others. Some drugs used in chemotherapy can also cause symptoms of sour stomach and indigestion.
Someone with acid indigestion problems is also likely to experience some bloating in the stomach area, burping, belching, gas and sometimes pain above the abdomen. Symptoms can be inconvenient and annoying but are usually harmless and temporary.
Acid stomach symptoms could, however, also be an indication of a digestive condition that requires a doctor's attention.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a cause of sour stomach or acid indigestion that is characterized by upper pain in the stomach area. Peptic ulcer disease, which triggers pain in the upper abdomen, is another of the causes of stomach acid problem. Pain from a stomach ulcer can be so uncomfortable that it keeps you tossing and turning at night.
Stomach cancer is another of the causes of stomach acid problem, but it is rare.
What are the remedies for symptoms of acid indigestion? Well, if you have episodes of stomach acid problems, You Can generally get relief by taking antacids and histamine (H2)-blockers. These remedies for acidic stomach can be obtained over-the-counter. Antacids neutralize stomach acid, which in turn reduces inflammation (also known as gastritis). Antacids are intended to give you fast relief of symptoms of sour stomach. Examples include calcium carbonate (which is found in Tums and various other medications) and magnesium salts (found in Mylanta, among other things).
H2 blockers decrease the secretion of stomach acid, giving inflamed and irritated tissues an opportunity to get better. H2 blockers include cimetidine (Tagamet), famotidine (Pepcid), nizatidine (Axid entirely) and ranitidine (Zantac).
If such medications work, you won't need to call a physician. But if acid stomach or acid indigestion are persistent and come back repeatedly, it's time to talk with a medical professional.
