American Idol? Canadian Idol? What's the reality of these reality shows? by Viga Boland
AMERICAN IDOL? CANADIAN IDOL? WHAT'S THE REALITY OF THESE REALITY SHOWS?
Up here in Canada, at the time I am writing this, we are down to the last 2 episodes of Canadian Idol, and as I've wondered every time I watch these Idol shows, are they really about the "talent", "the best", the most idol-like person in those finalists?
America got it right with choosing Taylor Hicks as American Idol 2006. Here was a consummate performer who absolutely loved what he was doing. He'd been doing it for years, had his own band, knows how to play an audience but most important of all would follow his passion had he won or not. Taylor Hicks was born to entertain. But how many of these final contenders in these show are entertainers as well as just good singers?
When you think of some of the major artists who are legends in their time, one thing becomes glaringly obvious: they are "entertainers" and they are "entertaining". Look at Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, Shania Twain, even Willie Nelson to name a few. Now here's the interesting thing: in terms of singing voices, none of those 4 have the best voices: Tina's voice has a strained edge; Rod Stewart is raspy much of the time; Shania Twain is often pitchy. And Willie Nelson is "nasal". If the criteria for an "idol" is a great voice, none of these would win. And yet, these fantastic entertainers are loved, have fans world-wide, have become legends in the entertainment industry and obviously love what they do.
So now, as Canadian Idol draws to a close and week after week Canada has voted off "the entertainers" like Ashley Coulter or Steffi D., to leave us with 2 finalists: Craig Sharpe and Eva Avila, it begs the question: what are the idol shows all about? Eva Avila is a superb singer and has everything that Kelly Clarkson has and more! Eva was born to sing, knows how to engage an audience and is easy-going and comfortable with crowds...all necessary requirements for a successful career in entertainment. Craig is a nice kid with a voice that a mother would love, but at 16 has such a lot to learn about stage presence and projection. How will he handle the press? How will he handle the pressure? At 16, does he really know what he'll want at 21? Avril Lavigne became a big star at 17 and now 5-6 years later is tired of the constant demands of the music industry and wants to get into movies etc. Will she still be performing for audiences when she's 40 or 50 like Barbra Streisand or Lisa Minelli or any of the legends?
And that's why the voting system for these idol shows can be unfair to the real talent as they become little more than popularity contests. If all the people in a contestant's home town or state starting hitting re-dial over and over so their home-grown talent might win, are we truly selecting the best in the country? If someone can vote 500 times for one person, that reflects that person's preference but does it reflect who the country really wants for an idol? The only fair way to find what a country wants for its idol is to allow one vote per person. But of course, that appears to be impossible to arrange. So time and again, some of the best who could entertain on a world stage and not just in their home town are sent home. But surely an idol should be someone with world-class potential? That's the "X factor" the "it" the judges are looking for: that special something that sets this performer apart from the rest...and so few of the finalists have "it"!
Which brings us back to those young people wanting and dreaming of becoming the next idol: Be careful what you wish for: it's not an easy trip to the bank or guaranteed success. If all you want is the fame for a year or so, and the country selects you by a ridiculous voting system, think how it will feel when your year is over. If you haven't become a household word, you fade into oblivion, unless you were born to perform, live to entertain, love what you do and have the drive to pick up and push yourself when tv audiences are busy voting for the next idol.
If you really want to sing and entertain, becoming the next idol isn't the only way to follow your passion and talent: there are many other avenues and often they turn out to be more rewarding both personally and financially. Read other articles at IDOL DREAMS to see how else You Can explore your talent even if you never become famous. If it's only about the fame, you're in it for the wrong reasons.
