Cool Tips For Saving Energy At Home When It's Hot

You might think of energy efficiency as being most effective in the colder or winter months. While there's no doubt that cold weather and inefficient homes result in the most energy usage and waste, You Can still save money and energy even when there's no need for heating. Simply apply some of the following easy home energy saving tips and you'll notice a difference in your energy bills all year round.

Natural Cooling

If you regularly use air conditioning in summer months then you can make some big savings by relying on more natural cooling solutions first. Keeping windows open is the easiest way to do this, but there are several other steps which make small differences that can add up. Avoiding using ovens during the day where possible will avoid making your home even hotter. Shorter or cooler showers may make a difference. And even switching to energy saving bulbs can reduce heat a little.

It's also worth keeping curtains closed (but windows open) in any rooms you aren't using during the day. This blocks the amount of sun heat which can get into the room.

Air Conditioning

A good way to approach using an air conditioning system is to treat it like a central heating system. Only use it just enough to achieve a comfortable temperature in the rooms it is needed. Don't be tempted to set the temperature far below what you actually want in the hope of cooling a room quicker: the thermostat simply controls what temperature the air gets to, not the time it takes to get there.

Cooling Fans

Electric fans can be very effective for quickly reducing the temperature in one or more rooms but a bit of thought about placement can give even better results and save you money. For example, placing a single fan in a hallway with doors to connecting rooms open is a good way to cool numerous rooms in one go.

If your building layout permits, try setting up two fans, one facing inwards by a window and one facing inwards by a window across the building. If you can set up a direct line, you'll ensure a very effective flow of cold air.

All these tips can work even better is you have a house and position fans facing inwards from ground floor windows and directed outwards upstairs towards open windows. This method takes advantage of the heat that rises through your home and creates a flow of air to encourage the heat to leave out of the open upstairs windows. It may also be worth thinking about putting the fan on the kitchen floor if you are using the oven, for example cooking a roast dinner. This will combine the benefit of cooling the air with the benefit of spreading that air around the building and lessening the effects of the heat.

Save On Laundry Costs

Drying wet clothes outside on hot days is one of the more obvious ways to save money on energy bills. Even if you don't have any outside space to hang your clothes, placing a clothes horse next to an open window will give similar results

By simply applying basic tips for saving energy at home and changing your energy usage habits around the house you can save money and the environment whatever the weather is doing.
