Description as well as Uses of Di Iso Butyl Ketone   by Tony Wagon

Di Iso Butyl Ketone

Di iso butyl ketone (also known as DIBK, 2,6-Dimethyl-4-heptanone, Isovalerone, and Isobutyl ketone) is a clear, colourless, stable liquid with a slight, sweet odour that is reminiscent of peppermint. It is miscible with most organic and natural compounds but is immiscible with water, and it has the formula C9H18O.

Production

Di Iso Butyl Ketone is created by first dehydrogenating alcohol to acetone. There is then a sequence of condensations and hydrogenations whichco-produces di iso butyl ketone, acetone, and methyl isobutyl ketonein a mixed ketone development. These products are then separated and purified and are prepared for use.

Storage and transportation

Di iso butyl ketone can be saved in large tanks or drums and can be transported by tank truck. It should be kept in a cool, dried up, well-ventilated area that is free from the risk of ignition. It has a specific gravity of 0.807 and a flash point of 49 °C and is, therefore, very much flammable. For carrying purposes, DIBK is categorised as packing group III and hazard class 3.

Uses

DIBK has a variety of components which make it a very valuable product across a range of industries. It provides good solvent activity, specially for many artificial resins such as vinyl, acrylic, alkyds, polyester and epoxy. It in addition provides high blush resistance, low surface tension, a high-boiling point, a slow evaporation rate, and low density. It is for these factors, that DIBK has found manufacturing purposes as a solvent, an additive, and as a formulation ingredient.
DIBK is most utilised in the coatings industry as it can provide good solvency for nitrocellulose lacquers, and for high-solids coatings and stains. Its low density and low surface tension in addition help in this industry. The low density is positive in formulating low volatile organic and natural compounds and coatings, and its low surface tension provides brilliant wetting, and exhibits "bite" for many plastic substrates which promotes fine coating adhesion.

Di Iso Butyl Ketone is in addition utilized as a solvent for paint stripper, adhesives, printing inks (roll-coating inks), and for cleaning and degreasing. It is in addition used as an extraction solvent for organic toxins, and an extraction solvent in the mining industry. It is also used as an extraction solvent, and recrystallisation aid, in the pharmaceutical industry where it aids in the purification process. It is also a chemical intermediate in the manufacture of diisobutylcarbinol and is a formulation ingredient in leather-based treatments.
