How Loft Insulation Works
Loft insulation works in the same way as a wooly hat: it blocks the natural movement of hot substances rising and thus traps the heat. However, unlike a hat, energy saving insulation products are designed to work more efficiently using layers and air pockets which trap and hold heat in for longer.
How Is The Performance Of Loft Insulation Measured?
There are two equations used to measure the performance of loft insulation. These are called the U and R value and compare the heat lost through an insulation material into the area being covered. In short, the U value measures the heat loss performance of the loft space and the R value measures the performance of the insulating material. Higher performance is indicated by a low U value and high R value.
A Closer Look At Insulation Materials Used For Loft's
There are a wide range of insulation types. The most common is a blanket made of glass, rock or mineral fibres, or felt backed with foil.
Another option is "loose fill", which is material such as mineral wool or cork granules which is better at fitting uneven spaces but more susceptible to damage from high winds.
Where a roof has large even areas, sheet insulation is another possible: it's made up of fibre glass or mineral fibre in a relatively rigid form and can be covered in plasterboard for a more attractive look.
It's also possible to use a special type of fibre which is blown via a hose and then "sets", though this is really only an option for professional installations.
Where Can't Traditional Insulation Be Used?
Lofts with damp and condensation aren't always suitable for insulation. This is because, although insulation keeps the house itself warmed, it often makes the loft area cooler, which can exacerbate damp problems.
Flat roofs can be insulated but this is expensive and a professional-only option. Many homeowners find it makes more sense to add external insulation on a flat roof at the same time as replacing waterproofing.
What Are The Costs And Savings?
The costs and savings naturally vary depending on the size of the house and the material used. As a rough rule the costs are likely to be in the low hundreds, varying slightly depending on whether you go the DIY route or get a professional installer. As a rough rule, adding the recommended 270mm of insulation to a previously uninsulated loft will generate enough savings to pay for itself within two to three years.
Can You Get A Grant?
At the time of writing there are a number of loft insulation grants and discounts available. However, availability depends on your location, property type and financial circumstances. You Can find out more about the latest grant schemes at this page http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/Easy-ways-to-stop-wasting-energy/Energy-saving-grants-and-offers/Grants-and-Discounts-Database.
Will It Reduce Your Carbon Footprint?
In an average home, adding insulation can cut the need for heating to the point that carbon emissions are lowered by as much as 800kg a year. This is equivalent to the C02 produced by the average car over two months.
You can read more energy efficient insulation measures on the energy saving advice website.
