Indian Media in a Globalised World $59.95 This book explores the transformation of Indian media in the context of two major developments: globalisation (which Sociologist Anthony Giddens terms as being ‘revolutionary’) and advances in communication technologies. It is rich in empirical details of how the Indian media has evolved in the past two decades, particularly in the context of potential to transform, construct and nurture particular identities in response to globalisation. The study of the transformation of Indian media is significant because not only has globalisation allowed access to a host of things hitherto represented as ‘foreign’ to Indian culture by the media, but it has also opened the floodgates for foreign media. Adopting a multi-disciplinary approach, this book looks at the role of media in purveying political, economic and cultural identities, the current definitions of ‘we’, ‘they’, and the ‘other’, and how the ‘other’ is perceived in contemporary India. The discussions cover all forms of media, that is, newspaper, films, radio, television and online media, along with media policy and other economic challenges facing the media. |

Internet Use Found To Be The Death of Social Skills
Ever since the internet has become commonplace, there has been a dispute about its affect on social wellbeing.
There are two groups involved in the debate about internet use. The first group are those who maintain that social media and the internet has enabled individuals to cultivate richer social lives than before. At the other end of the spectrum are those who maintain that the increased time individuals spent trolling around the internet have become more and more cut off from others, and are lacking in true socialization.
Science is now beginning to have its say.
Research done at the Stockholm School of Economics looked at the relationship between peoples’ internet use and their score on various measures of social wellbeing, such as emotional wellbeing and work life balance.
The lead investigator of the study, Dr. Elizabeth Engleberg found that individuals with who used the internet the most often were considerably lonelier and had a porrer work life balance than those with less internet use.
This evidence strongly substantiates the hypothesis that the web can’t stand in for true socialization. It seems that no matter how much people interact online, they do not find the true human interactions that they yearn for.
What’s more, it looks that too much internet use also stops people from building the skills vital to interact with others. Dr. Engelberg found that individuals who spent much time online performed worse on scales of emotional intelligence and social skills.
It is a pity that those who most need to learn how to interact with others are the ones using the internet the most.
Unfortunately, that intuitively makes sense: if people have difficulty interacting with others, they are much less enclined to engage in social interaction. Instead, they spend their time in solitary activities, such as surfing the web.
But by doing so, these individuals have no opportunity to improve their social skills. They’ve entered a downhill slide, where they spend increasing time online and become lonelier, but never feel comfortable interacting with others.
To get out of this downward cycle, people need to turn their computers off, go out, and create true human bonds with others.
As Dr. Engleberg’s study showed, this is critically important. Evermore so, in a world where people are spending increasingly more time on their computers.
